Sleeping Arrangements: Everyone in your Ward will be in a “Ward Camp” Ma and Pa will sleep in the same tent. Male and female youth will be in separate tents.
Toilet Issues on the Trail: Toilets are provided for all participants. If someone can’t wait for the next bathroom break, they must go with someone at least 50 yards from the trail. Please encourage everyone to use hand sanitizer after each potty break. Ma’s should be aware of any special needs of your family members. Come prepared.
Trash: We must take out everything we bring in. Nothing is to be buried! It helps and is encouraged to have a small trash bag on each handcart.
Insects: Mosquitos and other bugs are the most common. It is recommended that your insect repellent have a minimum of 17.5 deet.
Ticks: There are ticks in the area. Family members should check themselves each day. Spray insect repellent on shoe tops, socks, and lower pant legs to help prevent ticks. Contact a Medical Specialist if a tick is embedded in the skin.
Lightning: Lightning storms could happen. You will receive specialized training for this hazard. However, the best advice is to spread out and crouch down.
Hypothermia: Symptoms begin with intense shivering with difficulty in speaking or in a stupor. Pulse and respiration are slow. The days will be hot and the nights cool. (Mid‐90’s to mid‐40’s) Treatment should begin with prevention; go prepared for cool weather and rain. If a youth shows signs of hypothermia, take off any wet clothing and get them into a sleeping bag. Contact a Medical Specialist if symptoms persist.
Registration: When is the registration deadline? The deadline for trek registration is Sunday, May 11th Registration will be headed up and carried out on Ward level by the Y.W. and Y.M. leaders. The youth and leaders will all need to register by going to the trek website and filling out the Permission and Medical Release form. Please contact Stake YW leaders for any registration questions. What is a “Trek Family”? Each young man or young women will be assigned to a Trek Family. The bishops in the stake have carefully selected “Ma’s and Pa’s” from each ward. These individuals will lead your family for the duration of the Trek. There will be 5-6 members to each family.
What will we eat? Trek participants will be provided with snacks and three meals each day. Daily menus will be made by the trek food committee to provide for appropriate protein and carbohydrates. We will try to best handle specific allergies with our food committee. If you have a family member that has food allergies please let Rex and Jenny Harris know from the Stake.
What about bathroom facilities? Bathrooms will be available while trekking and at the camp sites. What are the sleeping accommodations? Each trek family will have tents assigned to their family. Girls will be separate from the boys. Each participant will bring their own sleeping bag, blanket, and pad.
Water...will there be plenty of Water? Yes, there are Hand Water Pumps located throughout the camp we will be staying at with unlimited usage. While on the Trail, each handcart will be carrying sufficient water for drinking and washing of hands. Sorry, there are not provisions adequate for washing hair or bathing.
Is dehydration a Real concern? Yes, it is. Numerous breaks will be taken while trekking to drink water. Drink at least 8 to 10 ounces of water at every break. Dehydration. This is one of the most frequently encountered medical issues along the trail.
• Water is the most important beverage, not Gatorade. Gatorade is great at the end of the day.
• Make sure everyone is drinking water; watch them do it. (If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.)
• Dehydration and heat exhaustion often go hand in hand, so make sure hats or bandanas are used. Keep the sun off your youth.
What will the Youth sit on in camp, for meals, devotionals etc.? 5-gallon bucket with a lid for your gear. It will also serve as your chair. (Make sure your name and family name are on the bucket) You will use a bucket (no bigger than 5 gallon) with a lid as your dual-function suitcase and seat for Rescue! It is a sturdy, waterproof suitcase, and it conveniently doubles as a camp chair. You may decorate your bucket and prepare a "seat cover/cushion" if you wish. Check with your ward leaders to see if they are doing an activity to "beautify" buckets. Make sure it has a screw on lid.
Why are electronic devices Highly Discouraged? This is a tremendous opportunity to get out of the world and worldly influences. This allows for better opportunities to feel the spirit in our lives. It allows for better interaction with family members and other trek participants.
Why should we use glasses instead of contact lenses? The wind always blows in this region. Dust and debris in the air is common.
Campfires, can we have Fires in Camp? There are 25 fire rings where we will be camping. Firewood will be provided by the Stake. This wood needs to be purchased in Wyoming, Federal law prohibits bring outside wood into the state of Wyoming due to bugs and insect concerns.
Will I be Reimbursed for Gasoline cost? Yes, it will be your responsibility to save and turn all receipts into the Stake after Youth Conference.
